A lot of this depends on the company you are dealing with and the ship to location.
For my photography business, I pay one flat rate to have my items shipped either to me or to a client directly. I trust the company a I deal with 100%(using them for over 2 years now and have yet to have an issue).
I can save anywhere from $3 to $30 per order depending on the speed at which the deliverables need shipped and the location if I do not have have them shipped to me first and then shipped back out.
